Ventura Celery solves the challenge of growing. Glossy bright green plants, 28-30 inches tall with 12-inch-long stems, are well developed and widely adopted. "Strong growth, good taste, and virtually no hollow centers," praises Nicholas Pantelis. Produces beautiful thick, crisp stems with an abundance of never-stimulating flavor, even under less-than-ideal conditions. The seedlings grow easily as long as they get enough water, which is necessary for stable growth. Irrigate when necessary. Tolerant to Fusarium, but susceptible to boron deficiency.
Ventura Celery Seeds on flat ground when the soil temperature is around 65 degrees F. The starting mix should be high in the finished compost. Cover the soil lightly and keep it evenly moist until germination occurs. Germination may take 2-3 weeks. Transplant at 8-10 weeks.
Adequate sunlight
The soil in finished compost should be very high. Celery may require an increase in magnesium and/or calcium - add compost leaves to the soil or compost mix. The watering schedule should be consistent for proper nutrient uptake by the stems.
~18″
8-10"
Ventura Celery prefers cooler climates, can withstand light frosts (32-34 degrees) and may become sweeter in cooler temperatures.
When the stems are at the desired height, harvest the entire stem by cutting or slicing at the base in contact with the soil. If blanching is required, wrap celery stems in heavy paper 2-3 weeks before harvesting.
Ventura Celery's rich flavor is a delightful addition to many dishes, including egg, chicken, and tuna salads, soups and stocks, stuffing, or on its own as a fresh and palate-cleansing snack!
